Rachel Conners of Bakerita
Rachel Conners is a goddamn Jane of all trades. This gal does it ALL. Baking, shooting, editing - you name it, she masters it. She runs the insanely popular blog Bakerita, where she shares tons of gluten-free/sugar-free/paleo/vegan treats.
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
Hi! I’m Rachel, and I’m a 24 year old living in San Diego, spending my days surrounded by gluten-free, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free baked goods! I’ve had a big sweet tooth for as long as I can remember, and I used to tell my parents I had a separate compartment in my stomach for desserts - I still think that compartment exists ;) I recently adopted a 4-month old puppy named Hank, so I’m also a full-time dog mom. I LOVE to travel, and try to get out of the country at least once every year (the traveller in me secretly dreams of converting an RV into a Bakerita studio and hitting the road). I do yoga to keep me sane, and I’m super close with my family.
What was the inspiration behind Bakerita?
It was actually my older sister Shaina’s idea for me to start a food blog, way back in 2010. At the time I started it, I didn’t even read food blogs, but my sister loved them and thought it would be a great outlet for me to share all the (very unhealthy) recipes I was making. As a senior in high school, I started Bakerita. My sister went gluten-free shortly after, and my dad quickly followed - they begged me to start making gluten-free treats, and from there, I fell in love with the challenge of creating allergen-free treats that are still ridiculously delicious and will satisfy all those dessert cravings. My personal diet has evolved over the years as well, as I’ve learned more about healthy and wellness, and Bakerita has evolved along with it - now, all of the recipes I create are gluten-free, refined sugar-free, and dairy-free!
What do you love most about your job?
Where do I even start…everything?!?! I feel SO lucky to do what I do, and have to pinch myself in gratitude every single day. As for what I love MOST? Being surrounded by deliciously clean desserts all day long is definitely a perk of the job, but my favorite thing is probably getting photos and messages from people who are making my recipes. Seriously, nothing makes me much happier, especially when it’s people telling me that they tricked a group of people who “don’t like healthy desserts” into loving something that’s a little bit better for them ;)
What do you love most about yourself?
My creativity, and maybe surprisingly, my stubbornness, which is something I’ve only recently learned to appreciate. I was always getting scolded as a kid for being too stubborn - but if I wasn’t stubborn about what I wanted and felt was right over the years, my life would be completely different. Being stubborn and strong-willed has allowed me to be different, which has gotten me to the place I am today - with a job I created that I truly love and am excited to wake up and do everyday. Just remember, it’s okay to zig when everyone else is zagging!

Take us through a day in the life of Rachel. We want all the deets!
Being a blogger, every day looks a little different, since I’m my own boss! But generally, my day starts around 6:30 am, usually to the whining of my little pup, Hank. We wake up, I chug a glass of water, and he eats his breakfast, and then we go on an hour-long walk. When we get back, I’ll either get into the kitchen to bake that day’s treats, or if I’ve made the recipe the day before, I’ll get right into photographing. The light in my apartment is best until about 1pm, so all of my photographing happens before then. Breakfast is usually snuck in there somewhere, or if I’m super busy, I’ll just eat a fat bomb or something to hold me over. After I’ve finished shooting for the day, I’ll make myself a healthy, fueling lunch…or just eat leftovers.
The second half of my day varies, but a lot of days I’ll head over to the coffee shop in my building to bust out a bunch of my computer work - social media, photo editing, post writing, all that sort of stuff! I need to get out of my apartment to really focus, so the coffee shop is essentially my office.
After that, I’ll try to end my work day, run any errands that need to get done and take some ME time - that usually involves getting myself to yoga, playing with and training Hank, and making myself a delicious dinner. Sometimes I do more work - which isn’t a terrible thing, because I love my work! I try to take lots of breaks during the day too, whether it’s to get some movement or do something that makes me happy. That might be a quick stretch sesh in the middle of a photoshoot or a walk to the grocery store to get my body moving.
By end the day, I’m pretty much always curled up on the couch with a book or the TV on, cuddling with Hank, sipping on some tea and eating chocolate - usually Eating Evolved coconut butter cups or leftover treats. Best way to end the day :)
What's on the horizon for you in 2018?
I’ve got a big project I’m working on (but not allowed to announce yet…I’ll be announcing soon though!) which will take up a ton of my time this year. I want to work on my savory cooking skills too, which will hopefully mean some more savory recipes on Bakerita, which is something I’ve been meaning to do for months! Also, going to Alaska with my family in August, which I am STOKED for.
And lastly, what makes you feel like a kween?
An awesome yoga class and a delicious + hearty plant-based meal, or freshly done nails and waxed eyebrows. Sometimes you just gotta look your best to feel your best!
