Q&A with Natalie Carey, Personal Trainer, Tonal
Hi! I'm Natalie Carey, a Body Positive Personal Trainer based in San Francisco, CA. I grew up as a ballerina, fell in love with weight lifting and competitive pole dancing in my 20's, and I love gummy bears and champagne!
Growing up in ballet, I was constantly fed the idea that my success and happiness depended solely on being skinnier and prettier than the other girls. As an adult, I want to work towards undoing that message that women's purpose in life is to always be thinner, and that other women are our competition, instead of our allies.
Wellness and health have to include my mental health too! I was diagnosed with severe anxiety and moderate depression a few years ago, and a combination of therapy and medication have helped me to be a better version of myself. I've always loved moving, but for awhile exercise existed to burn calories and lose pounds; now I'm just so thankful for what my body is capable of. I also used to go from one restrictive diet to another; I'm a lot kinder to my body now by feeding it when it's hungry. I really love gummy candies, so instead of judging myself for that, I get to enjoy those now too!
Surround yourself with the confidence and love you want for yourself! If you want to love your body, then spend time with people who love themselves and who want good things for you. Follow accounts that promote self love and that don't make you feel bad about yourself. Talk nicely to yourself. If you've spent a lifetime disliking yourself or your body, your relationship won't heal overnight, but if you surround yourself with messages of love, acceptance, and confidence, you can rebuild and strengthen all of those things.
I've really improved my ability to live in the moment and appreciate the present. I wasted a lot of years oblivious to the cool things happening around me, so I'm thankful I was able to turn that around.
I start by snuggling my cat for 10 minutes, then it's off to train clients for a couple hours in the morning. Afterwards I'll head to the pole dance studio for practice, and then I'm answering emails and planning workouts in the afternoon. On my fancier days I'll be filming workout videos with Tonal, the startup I work for. In the evenings I have more personal training clients, and then back at home my boyfriend and I hang out and snuggle our cat some more!
A big glass of champagne, sunshine, and someone to laugh with!
