I first met Hannah at the Good Fest LA a few months back, and was blown away by how emotionally intelligent and down-to-earth she was - not to mention TALENTED. I mean, just take a look at her 'gram feed!
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
Sure thing! Hi! I'm Hannah!
I’m 26 years old, was born & raised in Southern Cali, and I’m super passionate about pairing good food with great conversation, plenty of plants, occasional puns, and of course, ceramics. I’d also like to add that I’m easily won over by bold red wine, smokey BBQ, and the occasional foot rub.
What was the inspiration behind your account?
This is sort of a loaded question for me, but it’s loaded with the memories and sentiments that matter most.
The driving force behind starting my account was (and still is) connection - my desire to connect with like-minded people, cultivate creative and meaningful relationships, and share some major love for beautiful, delicious, drool-worthy food. But let me dig a little deeper.
I lost my mother to Metastatic Breast Cancer in 2012, after a 4 year battle. I grew up as an only child with little-to-no extended family, and when I lost my Mom, it was quite literally, just my father and I. This is why conversation and connection are so important to me. They allow me to feel close to others, and inspired by the lives they lead and the choices they make. Losing my mom to this disease hugely impacted my desire to treat my body well… and her initial diagnoses was the reason I began looking at my food as fuel. For the body, the mind, and most importantly, the heart.
I fell in love with food and produce as a teenager, and got my first job at a restaurant during my second year of college…as a dishwasher. I wanted to work in a kitchen, and I desperately wanted to “touch” food. Well, this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind, but it was a start. Fast-forwarding through a few years in and out of restaurants, working the line, “almost” going to culinary school, and yes, the dish pit, I realized that I missed my creative freedom, and connecting with people through conversations… something that was a little hard to do while staring at cutting boards and fry pans for hours on end.
So I guess this is when my account really started to take shape. It was a way for me express myself creatively, incorporate my love for plating and playing with colors and textures, and begin forming relationships with “then” strangers, who are now some of my closest friends and a community that never ceases to keep me full.
What do you love most about your job?
I currently have a number of jobs. I spend a lot of time doing freelance work, whether it be food styling, recipe development or copywriting. I also have a part-time retail job, and do some community & branding social media work on the side. My plate is definitely loaded, but honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love the challenge of creating new content from blank space. It’s like each project is a giant white canvas (or in my case, a speckled ceramic plate), and all I want to do is fill it up with vibrant colors and a giant splatter of sauce (also in this case, Ali’s Granola Butter). It’s overwhelmingly fulfilling to hear something I say, write or photograph resonates...it’s a true pleasure of mine to have fun with food and words, and sharing myself in this way with a community that continues to fuel and inspire me is the best part.
What do you love most about yourself?
At a first glance, I love my hands. Because they allow me to create, touch, cook, emote and play with my food. But beyond my physical body, I love my desire to form thoughtful, genuine connections, and my ability to nourish them as they grow into meaningful relationships.
Take us through a day in the life of Hannah. We want all the deets!
Oh boy. Another loaded question...The beginning of my day is always the same: I start things off with a giant mug of herbal tea and lemon, followed by breakfast (which is typically a variation of toast(s), oatmeal, eggs or a smoothie bowl. Then I brew up some coffee or whisk matcha, and open up my laptop to respond to emails. The middle of my day always contains bowls full of greens, a sweat session (either spinning, running, hiking or yoga), some creative work, and lately a 30 minute power nap. I try to reserves my evenings for family and friends, Netflix (you can always find me watching Chef’s Table), and some kind of sweet treat involving chocolate. And I’m usually lights out by 9pm.. with the help of ashwagandha tonics, lavender essential oil, and my wave machine.
What's on the horizon for you in 2018?
I definitely want to travel more - to visit friends and family in different states and also overseas. Europe has been on my list for quite some time, so I’d love to visit sooner rather than later. I’m also working on a few creative projects… think food, paper... and perhaps some workshops. I’ll be sharing more soon, so stay tuned!
And lastly, what makes you feel like a kween?
I feel like I could list so many things, and trust me, I want to. But lately, carving out more time in my day to practice some self-nourishment has me feeling like a kween. A few things that have been filling my heart up up lately: wandering through farmer’s markets on my own, impromptu nursery trips to smell flowers, weekly dinners with my father, and mini road trips up and down the coast to visit good friends, enjoy great food...and pair them both with a little bit of wine and as much laughter as possible!
