Allie Mason is a badass chick. When she wasn't loving the whole being-chained-to-her-desk thing at her 9-5, she did something that most people wouldn't: she made a change. Allie now runs The Health Mason and is a certified health coach in Baltimore.
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
My name is Allie Mason, a health foodie and wellness blogger living in Baltimore, MD. I went to college for PR and Advertising, but have recently transitioned into working as a full time blogger, which has been a learning experience in itself! I recently got engaged to the most wonderful man in the world, so when I'm not working on The Health Mason, I am Pinteresting and planning our Fall 2018 wedding.

What was the inspiration behind The Health Mason?
The Health Mason (@thehealthmason) is actually my second health-focused Instagram account. I used to share an account with a friend, but I realized 2 years into doing our account together that I'd ultimately like to make this my business SOMEHOW. I decided to branch out on my own and I have really enjoyed working solo. The inspiration behind my account in the past actually came from eating issues I faced in High School. During my recovery period, I found it was easiest to use "healthy" foods as fuel. This mantra stuck with me and has enabled me to live a healthier, happier life, free from the issues I dealt with in the past. Today, I am inspired by so many things as I continue to grow my Instagram and blog. I am inspired by the incredible friends I've made through the crazy world of social media. I'm also so inspired by nature. When I am feeling empty or need something to boost my morale, I go outdoors. I grew up riding horses which makes me think that those happy moments outdoors translated into my adult years. I don't feel inspired when I sit inside all day. My mood shifts completely with fresh air, and time outside always brings me immense inspiration.
What was the transition like from an office job to self-employed?
Oh boy has it been an interesting transition! I worked as the Social Media Manager for a local Advertising and Marketing firm here in Maryland, however I knew the 9-5 life was not for me. I struggled with the idea of sitting behind a desk all day, especially since I try to stay active! I worked at my company for 16 months, holding a variety of positions and moved teams a few times to try and find the right fit. Ultimately, after many evenings spent in tears about dreading the next day at work, I decided it was best for me to give the entrepreneur life a try. While it's certainly been far more difficult than working a steady job with an actual income, I have never been happier in my life. I actually have an entire blog post on my website featuring my tips for anyone who is considering shifting their "normal" job to one with a more freelance background.
What do you love most about your job?
The freedom. I love not being chained to a desk all day. That really got me down in my old job. I like to move around a lot throughout the day, so I would find myself getting in trouble for not SITTING at my desk for 8 hours straight. I love the fact that I can literally work anywhere. I work my best when I am completely alone, so an office setting was always difficult for me. Working as a blogger definitely isn't for everyone, but I think the freedom and flexibility is what I love most. Plus, I am doing what I love, and who doesn't dream of that?
What do you love most about yourself?
My sense of humor. I love the fact that I have learned not to take life or myself too seriously. I know it's so cliche but life IS too short to worry about everything. As someone who suffers from anxiety, I am learning to let go of things that are not in my control. I document most of my life on social media, and found that I feel my best when I highlight my true, goofy self. It's not worth it to me to be super serious (or super professional) all the time. I'm a HUGE dork and I completely embrace it.
Take us through a day in the life of Allie. We want all the deets!
Since I work for myself, each day is a little different. However, when I'm home in Baltimore, my days usually start around 8am with a coffee and a green smoothie loaded with ALL the adaptogens, collagen, and green leafy foliage I can get my hands on. I wish I could say I started my morning off with a meditation and hot water with lemon, but I don't. That doesn't work for my schedule right now, and I'm usually far too ravenous to start my day with lemon water. I spend my mornings responding to emails, working on blog posts, and checking in on Instagram. I live for my daily morning routine. I usually run my errands and take my #DailyWalk in the early afternoon before coming back home to work on recipes and get dinner ready for me and Yale. If I have time, I like to squeeze in a little at-home workout, but it all depends on the day. I spend most of my days in solitude, so by the time Yale and my roommates get home I am READY to socialize. I like to end my evening with a glass of red wine (not every night...but more frequently than not) and some post-dinner snacks. My evenings are precious to me, so I try not to spend too much time on my phone when Yale gets home from work. Quality time is my love language.
What's on the horizon for Allie Mason in 2018?
I want to write a cookbook. I WILL write a cookbook. I'm not sure if this will be in 2018 or 2019, but it's certainly on the horizon. I wanted to be a writer as a kid. I think part of me want to fulfill that childhood dream. Plus, I collect cookbooks myself, so selfishly, I'd love to add my own to my collection.
And lastly, what makes you feel like a kween?
Being my own boss. I grew up with a father and grandfather who started their own businesses, so I've always had an entrepreneurial mindset. There is nothing more rewarding to me than manifesting my dreams and watching them come to fruition. The past few months have been stressful, but I find that I thrive off the stress, and the passion I have for what I do keeps me going.
