How Cutting Out Coffee Changed My Life
How going caffeine-free changed my life
Coffee was like the bad boy who never liked me back – which naturally, only made me want it more. It wasn’t the taste of coffee that deterred me (in fact, I love the taste). It was the feeling of relying on a substance to wake me up in the morning. It was the jitters, the anxiety and the sweaty palms that made me realize perhaps coffee just isn’t for me.
So one day I woke up, looked at my coffee machine and firmly stated, “sorry coffee, I’m breaking up with you.”
How’d I do it? 100% cold turkey.
I’d love to tell you it was easy – it wasn’t. The first 3 days were pure hell, but I’d rather have you expect the worst and then realize “hey, this ain’t so bad!”
For me, the headache was the worst. I was pounding Advil like it was my goddamn J-O-B, and it was barely touching the pain. But after day 3, something incredible happened. I woke up, and I wasn’t exhausted. I didn’t have a headache. Shit, I felt downright good.
It’s been 2 months since I ditched coffee, and I’m never going back. No more “needing coffee” to wake up in the morning. No more jitters and anxiety after my morning cup. No more insomnia after a little too much caffeine later in the day.
Coffee didn’t work for me, but many people have no issues with it! Slamdaddy takes a “napuccino” – he pounds a cup of coffee and takes a 20 minute nap before the caffeine hits, claiming to wake up with boundless energy (#wtf). If coffee works for you and makes you happy, do you boo! But if you’re feeling like you may be better off without it, I urge you to try a 2-week caffeine detox, just to see how you feel without it.
